
Pablo Picasso, 1881-1973 LE PARTHENON signed and dated 2.7.59. coloured crayons on paper 12.5 by 19.5cm.; 4P by 7Nin. Executed on 2nd August 1959. This drawing highlights the plight of Manolis Glezos. Condemned to death in 1941 for raising the Greek resistance flag over the Acropolis during the Nazi occupation, he fought for Greek resistance movement until the liberation in 1945. After the war, Glezos, was again condemned to death no less than three times, in 1947, 1948 and 1952 for being a communist. He was sentenced to five years in prison in 1959, being released in 1962 only to be re-arrested in 1967 by the new military junta. He finally achieved liberty in 1971.
