RAF Greenham Common, Ground Launched Cruise Missile Alert and Maintenance Area (GAMA)
Ground Launched Cruise Missile Alert and Maintenance Area (GAMA), at former RAF Greenham Common, Berkshire, United Kingdom.
The six large shelters were constructed 1981-3 to counter the threat from the Soviet deployment of their SS-20 Saber Intermediate range Ballistic missiles. Each shelter could house 16 missiles, 2 mobile launch control centres and 4 Transporter Erector Launchers. They were built to withstand the blast of any nuclear air explosion above the base or a direct hit from a 2500lb conventional bomb.
The Ground Launched Cruise Missiles (GLCM) arrived in 1983, from august 1989 they started being removed from the site and by 1991 they had all been removed.
